BDSSS Surfing information for Today - Wed 27 Feb

Hi All,

Weather looks ok for Kepnock Pool today.

Just want to make sure everyone is clear about who has to come today.

· Any student who has not done the surf survival this year or does not have a current surf lifesaving award.

So this means to participate in the Wednesday afternoon competition you have to have done the surf survival this year or have a current lifesaving award.

I aim to start at 4.00pm at the latest and should take ½ an hour max.

I will try to get there earlier.

Rowing at Bucca- update

Dear Coaches and Parents

We have had questions regarding rowing training at Bucca, safety, boats etc and after discussions with the School Principal, Sports Director, Boat Committee, Head Coach and Coordinator,

the following decision has been made.

To our knowledge, no official clearance has yet been given to Bucca so rowers are rowing at their own risk. We feel at this stage, the St Luke's rowers that are going to Nationals should be the only ones training.

St Luke's boats that are being used by these rowers, have received permission from the Boat Committee to use the St Luke's boats as per our Boat Guidelines.

For any St Luke's students who wish to train for future school events, they can use the St Luke's Rowing boats for training as per the Boat Guidelines. They will also need to be paid up members of the Bundaberg Rowing Club.

Interhouse Swimming Carnival CANCELLED for TUESDAY 26 FEB.

Dear all,

It is with some reluctance that I write to inform you that tomorrow's Middle and Senior School Swimming Carnival is cancelled.

From the information that I have garnished from the Bureau of Meteorology website and a telephone call to the police, tomorrow's weather is going to be wetter than today's.

I know many students, staff and parents will be disappointed.

The Inter-House Swimming Carnival is always a great day, however I wish to assure you I have the best interests and health of the students and staff in mind.

The St Luke's swimming team for next week's BDSSS swimming carnival will be selected from times that were recorded during PE lessons. If you daughter or son is particularly keen to be a part of this team please ask them to speak with Mr Cowan or Mr Hughes.

Rowing Update 2013

Hi Everyone

As you all are aware, we are having a very slow start to the 2013 Rowing Season.

Repairs are underway at the Club House and Bucca as considerable damage was caused in the floods.

The boats are still not back in the shed but hoping this will happen in the very near future.

The main issue at the moment is the safety of the river and once we received further information, I will forward it on to you.

Welcome to our new families and rowers and look forward to working with you in the future.

Wide Bay Cricket trials have been cancelled tomorrow.

Fields are unplayable in Gympie (and we were hoping to shift the trials to Maryborough but they also coped all the rain yesterday).

The cricket trials have now been moved to Tuesday next week (Tuesday 26^th Feb) to be held in Gympie.

All other summer sport trials WILL GO AHEAD tomorrow (at the moment).

Justin Lane is making a decision on surfing in the next hour, due to rough conditions at Rainbow Beach.

BDSSS Rowing

Message from BDSSS Chair

Please pass the message below onto Rowing Reps and Rowing students.

BDSSS, at this stage, will not sanction Rowing activities until we are absolutely sure that we have safe training facilities for students.

There is reasonable concern at the moment around -

· The poor water quality of the Burnett which is a potential health hazard. It is possible that the Burnett river has been contaminated with untreated effluent, dead animals, and dangerous chemicals.

· Currently there are no safe access points from the Bundaberg Rowing Club until the pontoons have been replaced and the access ramps repaired.

· The Department of Maritime Safety has yet to undertake a full survey of the Burnett River.

· There are unconfirmed reports of sunken yachts from the town reach downstream towards Burnett Heads.

· There are visible obstacles upstream from the 'old' traffic bridge that prevent safe passage. There are visible sandbars across sections of the Burnett River which are normally used for rowing training.

There have been some school age rowers training on the Kolan River at the Bucca rowing course, but they have been training as members of the Bundaberg Rowing Club. There has been no official survey taken of the Kolan River.

Obviously we all hope that the problems can be overcome but it would seem sensible to adopt a cautious approach at this point.

Rowing update BDSSS 2013

Rowing update for Parents of School Rowing students.

Yesterday our reps attended the BDSSS meeting where discussions were held about the upcoming Head of the River series.

Information was given that the Burnett River is currently not safe for our rowers to be on.

It was suggested that all training be done at Bucca.

We stated that this was not a viable option as there would be 250+ rowers this year and to try to train on week-ends as well as getting boats to & from was not possible.

Suggestions were made that the HOR still go ahead on the dates set, April 21, May 5 & May 19.

St Luke's, Shalom and Bundaberg High representatives felt that these dates are out of the question.

Our Number one priority is the safety of the children and no-one knows when all the testing will be able to be done at the Burnett or Bucca to guarantee this.

There are also all the repairs that are required to be done at Bundaberg & Bucca before training can start & regattas can be held.

Our view is that we felt that we need to give consideration to our families that have suffered either with their homes, businesses or their families and how hard it has been and will be in the coming months for things to return to normal.

Our representatives felt that we should run the HOR series in Terms 2 & 3 and by then families hopefully would be able to handle not only the financial commitment to rowing but all the help our students need in coaching, taking them & equipment to training & regattas and all the help that is required by parents in running the regattas.

We suggested we have the 2 Lead-up Regattas late 2nd term & early 3rd term with the HOR early September. There is a Club Regatta on the 17/18 August & State Titles 21/22/23 Sept.

By having it in between, hopefully Bucca will be finished and it gives our new rowers more experience

in training & regattas.

No definite decision has been made yet as to when Rowing will be on in 2013.

BDSSS Surfing information

Important info for Surfing – Trials and Summer Season

Hi All,

The following information concerns Bundaberg District Surfing Trials and the Summer Surfing Comp.

Bundy Trials

All students wishing to trial for the Bundaberg District Team need to assemble at Kepnock SHS pool at 4 pm to participate in a Surf Survival course. 2012 Wide Bay Team members have automatic selection.

However, they are still required to participate in the surf survival course.

Any student who has a Surf Lifesaving Certificate or higher must show evidence to the District Convenor in order to be exempt from Surf Survival. Students will be notified of their selection on Friday 15/2/13 through their school convenors.

Please send a list of students from your who intend to trial to me by Wednesday morning.

Summer Surfing Comp

Because of the unsafe conditions in the ocean the weekly competition will be postponed. Conditions will be monitored each week and when the conditions are deemed safe the weekly competition will commence. We will still be having the all schools competition on Summer Finals Day.
